Voted against extending unemployment insurance, despite the fact that the unemployment rate in the 10th district--5.5%--mirrors the national average.

Voted against legislation that would provide tax benefits for new homebuyers and offer a lifeline to homeowners struggling to avoid foreclosure.

Opposed the Paycheck Fairness Act and Lilly Ledbetter Act, which would have ensured pay equity for women.

"I know that others think this is a big issue, but I've heard very little. I have a very high-income district." -Mark Kirk, 6/16/08

Kirk called for foreclosure relief for homeowners, saying: "Foreclosures hurt more than families, they depress the values of neighborhood homes and reduce the number of taxpayers supporting local schools." -Mark Kirk, 4/4/08

Kirk said the bills, which would have made it illegal for companies to fire employees for sharing wage information and removed the unfair regulation that a women had to file wage discrimination lawsuits within 180 days of the first instance of discrimination, would "force women" into class action lawsuits. 8/14/08

Women are major contributors to their households, with 62 percent of working women earning half or more of their family's income, yet they continue to receive only 77 cents for every dollar that men make for the same work.
